EMPLOYEES HONORED BY POLICE DEPARTMENT
July 24, 2009

The Police Department announces the sworn and civilian employees for April – May – June 2009.

Sergeant Von Anderson was the Sworn Employee of the Quarter. Although he was assigned to the Traffic Unit, he consistently monitors radio traffic and provides assistance to patrol officers on any type call when he is available. These calls include anything from a house check, burglar alarm, agency assist, or directing traffic. With his consistent record, it is no surprise he was the first officer on scene at a triple homicide on April 25, 2009, and wrote the initial report. He is willing to go far beyond what is expected of him. He is very professional and efficient while doing his job and exemplifies the best traits an officer can have.

Communications Officer Jessica Grimes was the Civilian Employee of the Quarter. During this time period she handled a number of high-profile calls which resulted in quick arrival of the officers and the apprehension of suspects. On June 24, she relayed information of an armed robbery at the Golden Pantry on Prince Avenue; the offender was apprehended. A burglary-in-progress call was received to an Odd St residence on June 25; four minutes after the call was received, a suspect was in custody. She dealt with a hysterical mother whose child had been injured and provided hydrant information to the Fire Department during an alarm activation. She also gathered a lot of information on a triple murder suspect in April. Getting information out quickly to officers has helped make Athens a safer place by removing the offenders from the street. Her positive attitude and consistent good work helps with shift morale.

Chief Joseph H. Lumpkin Sr., presented each with a plaque and expressed his appreciation for their dedication and hard work.
